Bomar Pulls A Bomar!

The reports are coming in fast and furious, now. Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar has been dismissed from the team for accepting money for work he did not perform.

As dumb as he looks.

Discuss here, readers.

Update [2006-8-2 14:31:25 by HornsFan]: SoonerSports.com has crashed. This couldn't -get- any funnier. Let the Paul Thompson era begin.

Update [2006-8-2 14:37:10 by HornsFan]: I've ceased working. I'm just staring at my computer and laughing. Viva El Boracho!

Update [2006-8-2 14:46:58 by HornsFan]: Sooner fans are suggesting arson for the car dealer/booster who paid the players. Definitely put me in the "I'm REALLY Enjoying Watching The Sooners Squirm" camp.

Update [2006-8-2 15:2:55 by HornsFan]: Now that the giggling has stopped, a moment of sadness that we won't get any more moments like these:

Who is the backup?
And if MattH is right, losing a starting o-lineman, with all of the questions already, I cant wait to go to Dallas.

guess they'll be tumbling...
...in those preseason rankings fairly soon.

by nico on Aug 2, 2006 1:27 PM CDT   0 recs

That sucks
I don't know anything about Oklahoma QB depth.  Who will start in Bomar's place?

I was really looking forward to a competitive game in Dallas this year.  Huge blow for OU fans.

by chief on Aug 2, 2006 1:30 PM CDT   0 recs

Really?
I dont know about you, but I love this.
I dont wish physical harm on the sooners or hope for an injury, but them getting caught cheating.  That is just perfect.

Sure
But when UT destroys OU again this year, we'll have a whole season of "B-b-b-but Bomar!" excuses.  I would rather we just beat them flat out, without gaining advantages that cheapen the victory.

by chief on Aug 2, 2006 1:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

nope
I would rather beat them and get to call them cheaters at the same time.  like Wells said, it's not like we are rooting for OU's plane to crash, but getting got cheating?...now that's gold.

Exactly
This is completly different that AP's ankle.  I would never wish that on someone and you get the but his ankle excuse.  There is not excuse for cheating, none.

At USC
They would have simply made him repay the money and Carroll would keep insisting "he will not miss a game."

by Nestor16 on Aug 2, 2006 1:32 PM CDT   0 recs

Again with "Pa Leinart = booster" ?
I know that for anyone who has had to pay Westwood rents, subsidised housing would be like a red flag to a bull, but at least we keep our corruption in areas grey enough that repayment is an option.

This Sooner business is just dumb by comparison.

by DC Trojan on Aug 2, 2006 3:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

here's their QB depth, as per CFN
i guess they go with thompson, but who knows?

Top Backups
- Joey Halzle, Soph.
The JUCO transfer enrolled early and looked good enough to eventually be a solid number two man. He struggled once the OU defense turned the heat up and needs more time in the system to be even close to strong enough to be an adequate fill-in for Bomar, but he's tall and very fast.

- Sam Bradford, Fr.
With good speed and great size at 6-5 and 200 pounds, Bradford is an athletic recruit who'll get a crash course in the offense once he arrives this August. He threw for 2,422 yards and 19 touchdowns last year as an Oklahoma high school all-star.

- Paul Thompson, Sr. - 11-26, 42%, 109 yds, 1 INT
The starter going into the 2005 season, Thompson will forever be known as the quarterback who lost the home opener against TCU. He moved to receiver with the emergence of Rhett Bomar where he caught 11 passes for 106 yards, but he's still in the backup mix at quarterback with good size and tremendous speed.

Halzle is the back up
and he is really, really, really bad.

I watched their spring game and he was flat out ugly.
Amazing that he was a 4 star recruit too.

OU is done, stick a fork in them and get ready for 07.

My question is, will Stoops finally go to the NFL or a program like Miami?

As Dumb as they get
sure it is OU, but the life of a starting QB at any school is about the equivalent IMO of being a rockstar.  what an idiot.

sportsbook.com has removed all Oklahoma lines.  looks like they need to rethink some things.

From ESPN:
"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.

"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.

Sure Bobby...  Guess free cars don't count.

Let this be a lesson to all traitors
Peterson chose OU over Texas for an MNC, because he didn't think Texas could.

Since then:
Humiliated in MNC game
Texas wins it all
Caught driving "borrowed" Lexus
Lost his starting QB
Lost another O-lineman on an already shaky line
Will leave with cheater label and without MNC

by EYESofBEVO on Aug 2, 2006 2:06 PM CDT   0 recs

holy shit
this is some serious news. it makes me wonder if we have any players that just haven't gotten caught yet. or, maybe bomar is just as dumb as he looks. OU can kiss their season bye.

by jimmer on Aug 2, 2006 2:07 PM CDT   0 recs

Mack gives the same speech
that Stoops gives, so it is ultimately up to the players.

If you look at the players that Mack recruits, these kinds of things won't happen as often as they do other places.

However, sometimes a bad apple or two (Erik Hardeman, RT) slips through the cracks, but they usually leave or get run off before it affects the team.

by the other Andrew on Aug 2, 2006 2:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't remember Erik, but RT
was non-school related.

this was booster related for OU. I am sure we have some boosters that want to slip some extra dough to the kids - you think they are responsible enough to 'just say no'.

by jimmer on Aug 2, 2006 3:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Would you say no
to 18,000 for a 5 hour a week summer job?  Also, this is the same dealership that provided AP with the free ride.
You would think after that the school would cut ties with Big Red Imports, but they are still the company that provides all the coaches and staff with cars.
This is not some rogue booster, this guy has major dealing with the school.
The Harbinger of Deleted Diaries

by Wells on Aug 2, 2006 3:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hardeman
never stepped foot on campus.  He got caught with some drugs and stuff in N. Austin, but I digress.

I'm just saying that every single D1 coach gives the exact same speech about compliance.  If, for the most part you've recruited "good" kids, you'll avoid these systemic, team-wide compliance plagues.

by the other Andrew on Aug 2, 2006 4:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He made it to campus
and was a redshirt freshman, I believe.
I seem to remember him playing in a spring practice.

Anways, Hardeman is one of those faceless "Sneezy Beltran" types that Texas has on campus every year -- and eventually leaves.

I'm applying to Oxford and the Sorbonne. Harvard's my safety

by EYESofBEVO on Aug 2, 2006 4:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Apparently
and this is pure conjecture based off of reading the OU message boards, but the scandal occured at none other than Big Red Imports - a car dealership w/ loose ties to the University, and the same one which let AD "borrow" that Lexus.

I am sorry but this really is too much fun.

by PB @ BON on Aug 2, 2006 2:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The news gets better
Reports on Sooner radio are sounding even worse.  There are possibly 10 more players involved INCLUDING Adrian Peterson.  This car dealer has been giving things to all of these kids.  The NCAA looks to get involved soon.

by SuperHorn on Aug 2, 2006 2:39 PM CDT   0 recs

That is an unfounded rumor
That's just not true! Bomar and Quinn are the only ones involved. Peterson was already cleared by the NCAA in the spring.

by MattH on Aug 2, 2006 2:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not true?
or you just can't believe it?
Crystal Balls

by MMHorns on Aug 2, 2006 2:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Peterson was cleared for the free car
The question is did he start "working" there soon after?
The Harbinger of Deleted Diaries

by Wells on Aug 2, 2006 2:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

AP
Peterson was never cleared by the NCAA.  He was cleared by the OU Athletic Admin.  There was never a NCAA investigation.

Big suprise, AP was cleared by the OU admin for driving a free Lexus around for a few weeks. Which according to the cheaters, is a perfectly normal thing to give a 19 yr old (with no job)a brand new Lexus to test drive for a few weeks while "his financing clears" .  Question is, if Stoops had not found out would he still be driving it?

I guess Bomar isn't enough of a big shit to get a free pass.  I'm not sure if we are hearing the whole story here.  I know Bomar was on thin ice due to the alcohol, but it seems odd that a snake like Stoops would cut his starting QB without any prodding from the NCAA.

by NM on Aug 2, 2006 9:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

From the sooner boards:
"I just spoke with a kid we used to coach and he said there are possibly as many as 6 other players who may be penalized or suspended.

So brace yourselves for possibly having more bad news in the next few days. I hope you don't consider this a rumor, this kid is currently a starter at OU and he was pretty choked up when he told us, so please don't kill the messenger."

Fine, so it's just speculation, but can you imagine the disaster in Norman if even one or two more guys get kicked off or suspended?  The Land Thieves won't have to worry just about losing a bunch of games this year - they may start losing recruits for this year and next.  Justin Johnson comes to mind.

So
If this is done by Oklahoma , and not NCAA i give Stoops props for doing that even as much as it will hurt. Still great to read, but if I am wrong then screw Stoops, HA HA HA HA

by Rigger on Aug 2, 2006 2:51 PM CDT   0 recs

It was an OU internal investigation
but the NCAA must have been sniffing around for them to kick them off the team like that.
The Harbinger of Deleted Diaries

by Wells on Aug 2, 2006 3:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

NCAA
The were booted because it was a blatant infraction and a major violation. The NCAA had nothing to do with it and by booting them before the first practice it should keep them from any other NCAA penalties.

by MattH on Aug 2, 2006 3:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't give Stoops praise
He was just covering his ass to try and keep the NCAA from punishing the program for years to come.  This was not a "noble" act.

True
So yea Screw him and the horse he rode in on ,HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

by Rigger on Aug 2, 2006 3:19 PM CDT   0 recs

Oh the irony
Now how much game experience does OU have behind center (and a weak o-line)?  Granted, the #2 has passed in JC, but the D1 pace is faster, and he's having to learn the new system in much shorter of a time that Colt McCoy.  Jevan would be about the same situation as this guy.

Oh, but Jevan actually looked pretty good in the Spring game.

I'm giddy!

by GoHorns on Aug 2, 2006 4:47 PM CDT   0 recs

It depends on...
...who wins the position battle. Halzle has only 1 spring under Wilson's offense and no division I game experience.

Thompson has game experience and has been in the program for 5 years.

by MattH on Aug 2, 2006 5:17 PM CDT   0 recs

Thompson also imploded against TCU
It will be interesting to see what happens.
The Harbinger of Deleted Diaries

by Wells on Aug 2, 2006 5:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Halzle looked like crap in the Spring Game
From what little I saw of him on the FSN broadcast, he was not impressive.  I would assume at this point Thompson has the advantage.  If you consider the prospect of getting "Crowdered" and "Robinsoned" for 60 minutes in October an advantage.

by patienthornsfan on Aug 2, 2006 8:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I saw the same thing
Although, you could say the same about the Texas QBs at moments.

Halzle is slow and not very athletic.

Yet, Jason White......

I think if anything both offenses are on equal footing, aside from the O-line.

Hazle runs a 4.56 40.  That's about the same that VY ran in the NFL combine.  He's not slow.  Athletic?  Maybe.

by hodad on Aug 3, 2006 9:27 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You are right
he'll run just like VY.

BTW, if you are getting that time from a paid recruiting site I would beware. These are the same sights that list TJ Ford as 6'1 and Roy Williams as 6'5.
They tend to make things up. Alot of those times are word of mouth -- and not official laser times.

I'm guessing Halzle on a laser time, like the one VY used, is about a 4.7 to 4.8 at best.

by EYESofBEVO on Aug 2, 2006 8:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not good
If Austin High were a college team, we'd be the Kansas Jayhawks...we even had a portly coach when I played there name Tubberville who got fired after my senior year (0-9-1). There have been a couple of years here and there when AHS has backed their way into the playoffs thanks to UIL allowing 3 teams from each district into the playoffs, but it's hard to point to a single truly significant win in the last 30 years. Worst of all, I don't believe AHS has ever beaten our so-called rival, Westlake.

It's sad. There have been plenty of talented players at Austin High, but it's never translated to a lot of wins. My line coach when I was there used to say that the reason AHS never could turn the corner is because West Austin kids were too spoiled and didn't know what it was like to be hungry. He may have been on to something, but that never stopped Westlake from winning, so it's hard to use that as an excuse.

What if the player...
"accidentially" finds $1,000 in his shoe after practice. If nobody else claims it, shouldn't he be able to keep it.

That's what makes the Bomar story even more idiotic...if he just took the $18,000 in cash, he probably would have gotten away with it. Instead, he told Uncle Sam about it.

I think Bomar should file the student exemption on his tax return and recover most if not all the taxes he paid on that $18,000. He's gonna need it.

by 54b on Aug 2, 2006 10:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I cant imagine thats how he got caught
The IRS doesnt police that stuff.

My guess is when the dealership changed hands in April, they started wondering where that $30k went from their balance sheets.

by the other Andrew on Aug 2, 2006 11:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Plausible Deniability
I didn't say the IRS busted him...simply that filing a W-2 (a government document, thus the Uncle Sam reference)removed all plausible deniability. The new car dealership owner probably showed the Sooners Bomrar's W-2 form showing $18,000 as his proof. And he may have even thrown in a timesheet or two that showed the idiot only working five hours a week.

Believe me, if there wasn't a W-2 form, Bomar would probably still be on the team because he'd still have plausible deniability. In other words, Adrian Peterson is still on the team because nobody could prove that he was getting an extra benefit by supposedly just "test-driving" that Lexus. There was no paper trail unlike with Bomar wheret the dealer can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bomar accepted money he didn't work for.

by 54b on Aug 3, 2006 7:14 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I hope i can still say...
"That guy just pulled a Bomar" or "that guy got Bomarred!" It has already entered my vocabulary at the workplace. Also, we laughed heartily at the first news of this.
